Screw up the routine

Every so often, you should throw your routine out the window.

I start most days writing a list of things to do. Not today. Today was filled with empty space and loved ones.

You don’t want to become an expert task completer.

You want to become someone with peace of mind.

An expert task completer is always looking for the next thing to do.

A master of life is content with what is right now. You can tell how close you are to fulfilment if you can go a day without improving yourself or anything else and feel fine.

Screw up your routine and replace it with nothing. Then ask yourself, what do I miss?

Today I ate birthday cake, happy birthday Georgia, pizza, sushi. Took a nap in the mid afternoon. Stared out the window, spent as much time as possible away from a screen, daydreamed.

You know what I missed most?

Writing. Creating. Making.

And I figured out why.

Creating isn’t part of my routine anymore. It’s a part of who I am.

When’s the last day you did nothing except let your imagination run?

If you can’t remember, maybe it’s time.

Your brain works best when you're not telling it what to do.
