Get too used to walking on footpaths and you won't want to take a step off.
Get too used to following the same steps everyone else has taken and you won't be willing to try something new.
You practice doing something different by walking on footpaths less.
If you see a path has been made for you, try walking beside it. Try walking a different route.
Practice letting your feet feel the grass. Practice seeing what doing something different is like.
Then when you go to work on the thing different to everyone else, you'll have already started.
